The skincare market has never been more crowded, and the messages have never been more contradictory. New ingredients, ten-step routines, competing claims about what your skin really needs, it is no wonder so many women feel more confused than helped. At The AllBright's Live Well Festival, a panel of experts took a different approach: less noise, more honesty.
The conversation was anchored by Lavinia Stone, Education Manager at British skincare brand Medik8, alongside celebrity master facialist Michaella Boulder, integrative nutrition coach and founder of 79Skin Karen Cummings, and skin health ambassador and health coach Donna Bartoli. What emerged was a surprisingly simple picture.
The Skincare Routine That Actually Works – It Starts on the Inside
The first thing to understand, Michaella argued, is that skin issues rarely begin at the surface. "When you have an issue on the outside of your skin, we tend to know it's coming from the inside," she said, "whether that's genetics, medication, or trauma from inside or outside – scar tissue, high pigmentation, sun damage." Working from the bottom up, addressing what is happening internally through nutrition, hormones and overall health, is where lasting results begin. Topical products then build on that foundation rather than trying to compensate for its absence.
The Best Skincare Ingredients for Healthy Skin
On the ingredient side, Lavinia was equally direct. "The industry is extremely overwhelming and every skincare product is claiming to be the next best thing," she said. "But what our skin needs to thrive is essentially what the skin is made from." That means reinforcing and replacing lost lipids, fatty acids, humectants and proteins: hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamin C and vitamin A. Not a shelf full of products, but a small number of well-chosen ones used consistently.
How to Simplify Your Skincare Routine – Vitamin C, SPF and Vitamin A
Her framework is straightforward. A good cleanser that respects the skin barrier. Vitamin C serum in the morning. Sunscreen, which she describes as the single most powerful anti-ageing ingredient available. And vitamin A at night to rehabilitate skin cells while you sleep. "Three or four core essential ingredient products can give you exceptional skincare results," she said. "People have ten-step regimes and that's just not always necessary."
The panel's desert island picks were equally telling. Lavinia chose hyaluronic acid alongside SPF: "We're all chronically dehydrated because of our lifestyles, and hyaluronic acid gives your skin this amazing density and volume and makes it feel comfortable." Karen reached for the ZIIP device, Donna for her full body red light panels. Different tools, but the same underlying principle: invest in what you actually understand and will use consistently.
Consistency, in fact, was the thread running through almost everything the panel said. "We're exposed to so many elements every single day — stress, environment — that we're constantly losing the moisture and nutrients our skin needs," Lavinia explained. "Consistency is really important, particularly if you want to target something more stubborn like hyperpigmentation or ageing. Keep your routine really simple so you never skip it. Treat it like brushing your teeth."
The simplicity is, in a market designed to complicate everything, quietly radical. Know what your skin is deficient in. Replace it. Protect it. Repeat.
